I Am Carina And I Speak For The Books!

I am Carina, and I speak for the books! I read books because I love to and I write reviews because I need to place my thoughts in "paper". My reviews are honest. Usually not mean, but I can't make promises. Even when I don't like a book, I try to be as nice as possible. And when I love a book, I'm not going to lie, there might be some Fan Girling and Gushing.

The Nightmare Affair (The Arkwell Academy, #1) - Mindee Arnett A little bit silly, a little bit funny. A little bit predictable, a little bit obvious. A little slow paced, a little fast paced. A little disappointed, a little nicely surprised.A little redeamable...This was all over the place, wasn't it?I was underwhelmed by the first 30-40% of the book. It was just reading like any other YA book outhere, full of cliches and trends. It was too predictable and it wasn't anything I hadn't tried already. This realization was very disappointing, since I had been looking forward to geting my hands on a copy asap ever since I fist laid eyes on the cover and synopsis.I was extremly excited to request a copy from Netgalley and over the top with happiness when I was approved. Then I started reading, and I was let down by the lack of originallity in such a promising story.Ok, yes. Some ideas were original, and some characters might be fresh to this comunnity, but not nearly enough to set it aside from other YA works out there. Now hold your horses! Because I was not all bad.Yes, there are some very big cliches in here, but about half way throu, the story started getting more interesting. More engaging, and I finally got to the point of enjoyment. The mystery and action is kicked up a notch and you can almost feel the faster pace the book picks up.Throw in some secrets being revealed, some dangerous endeveours tossed in the way, some conflicting emotions and some "I saw those coming....but I didn't see THOSE coming!" plot twists, and voila! You have a redeamable last half.Good enough to make me want to read book 2? Definitely. So, no. This was not the blow me out of the water book I was expecting. But it did not turn out to be all bad either. If you're at that point where you want to quit, hang on for a bit longer. You might just end up enjoying this more than you thought.Thank you Netgalley, for providing me with an ARC to review.3 starsCarina Approved
